Ocean Systems Laboratory in St. Thomas opened on April 1, 2003. It is certified in drinking water
and wastewater analysis. The laboratory was set-up with all new equipment in a clean, newly constructed
facility with three central air-conditioning units for temperature control in each of three rooms
designated for different analysis. We are located on Benner Bay Lagoon. A dock behind the laboratory
allows for samples collected by boat to be brought directly to the facilities.
In May of 2007, Ocean Systems Laboratory was designated Primary State Laboratory and is now the only
DPNR-EPA certified laboratory in the territory. The laboratory handles all the drinking water, waste
water and ambient water on St. Thomas and St. John.
The St. Thomas Laboratory has initiated testing of Oil and Grease
utilizing EPA Method 1664. The laboratory will run Oil and Grease on soils and water. Soil analysis requires
the determination of the percent moisture in a soil sample so that the results can be expressed as mg of
oil & grease per Kg of soil. This test analysis costs $150. per sample due to the increase in sample
preparation, while the oil and grease for water or wastewater is $85.00. Since the test requires one liter of
liquid for the extraction, sending samples to an off-islands laboratory costs near $85.00 for shipping alone.
There is considerable saving running your samples at Ocean Systems Laboratory.
The laboratory will furnished the required bottles for the collection of samples.
